DUBAI // The number of passengers using public transit on New Year’s Eve in Dubai reached 1,793,691, according to statistics released by the Roads and Transport Authority.

The metro network carried 769,817 people, with 509,089 using the Red Line and 260,728 on the Green Line.

The Tram carried 32,850 people, while public buses transported 393,763. Also, 53,932 people travelled by ferry, and 543,329 used taxis.

The RTA had prepared a comprehensive traffic management plan for New Year’s Eve, which always experiences heavy traffic especially in the Dubai Mall-Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Water Canal areas.

The plan was intended to ensure the integration of various mass transit modes and traffic systems to ease the movement of New Yea’s Eve revellers.

Operating hours for the metro and tram were also extended, so that both services would run continuously from dawn on 31 December 2016 until midnight of 1 January 2017, reported Wam, the state news agency. More info
