Passengers seek bus route

SHARJAH: Many residents in Al Taawun district, an area with high-rise buildings opposite Ansar Mall along Al Ittihad-Al Wahda Road have said lack of a bus line increases runover accidents, a common menace in the area.

“Whether I am coming from Dubai or Sharjah, the buses drop me at the side of Ansar Mall. I am left with three choices: Crossing the road, spending Dhs10 to make a detour or walk for more than an hour to get to an underpass and return to this area,” said Mubarak Mugalu.

Last week, two women were killed while crossing the road.

There is no pedestrian bridge or underpass for a stretch of about two kilometres.

When asked which bus can a passenger take to go to Al Taawun area, the Director of Public Transport at Sharjah Transport Corporation, Rabia Al Marzouki said: “There are two buses although they do not connect the area directly. The buses are Bus No.3 and 8.”

Bus no.3 plies on Al Rolla-National Paint Roundabout route. It passes through Al Majaaz and Al Khan via Dar Al Khaleej.

The shortest route to Al Taawun is from Dar Al Khaleej. Bus no.8 plies on Al Rolla-Al Nahda Park route.

“Initially, bus no.3 used to connect Al Taawun area, but there was a lot of traffic jam that held people going to work,” she said.

Rabia said the STC would construct a sub bus terminal in the heart of Al Taawun, which will “solve all these issues.”

It will connect neighbouring areas as well as the Emirate of Dubai.

The work on the terminal will start at the end of this year, said the STC Director General, Abdullah Al Zari.

“The sub-terminals will help de-congest Jubail Main Bus Terminal,” he told The Gulf Today recently.

The three sub-terminals will be located behind Al Taawun mall, in Al Mowaileh and near Sharjah Club, close to Adnoc petrol station.

It would be a good iniative from authorities if there is a new Bus Route through Al Taawun area.
