DUBAI: The transportation authorities in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have launched a Green Bus powered by bio-diesel in a bid to pursue clean transport which is friendly to environment.
A Green Bus uses bio-diesel B5 produced from recycled waste cooking oil to reduce emissions of pollutants and its internal lightening is powered by solar energy.
The initiative, the first of its kind in the region falls under a wider picture the UAE Vision 2021 of Green Economy for Sustainable Development as envisioned by the Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of aSheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
It was launched in cooperation with SS Lootah Group and in coordination with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), according to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RTA’s Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector, Abdul Mohsen Ibrahim Younes.
He said SS Lootah “intends to experiment with the use of environment-friendly bio-fuel technology (Bio Diesel). The Project is also run in coordination with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which will promote the initiative within the scope of its activities to support sustainable transport.
Younes said the bus would run for about a year before deploying more of such buses. More info
