Dedicated lanes to make bus travel a traffic-free experience

In a massive expansion of the dedicated bus and taxi lanes network in Dubai, 30km of bus and taxi lanes will be added to some of the busiest areas in the city next year, Gulf News has learnt.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is ready to deploy its crowd management team to assist an expected huge crowd that will be taking the free ride in the Dubai Metro, water taxis and public buses today, the Public Transport Day.

You can get to know 'The Centre of Now' a little better by hopping on a tour bus or abra and discovering Downtown Dubai. The Boulevard Bus Tour takes in points of interest such as The Burj Monument and the Together statue. The tour lasts about 30 minutes and bus timings are from 10am to 10pm daily.

A 14-seater bus was gutted by fire at Jumeirah Beach Residence today. A Dubai Civil Defence team were able to extinguish the fire shortly after. It is not clear if there were any passengers on board the bus, but no injuries were reported.

Finally, a bus route from Ibn Battuta Metro Station to Abu Dhabi will be started following constant calls from the public who had to go to faraway stations like Al Ghubaiba on the way to or from the capital. The Public Transport Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) also inaugurated nine new internal bus routes within Dubai “to boost the bus transit network and keep up with the rising demand for mass transit means in general and public buses in particular.”

Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) officials told Gulf News on Sunday that six months' notice have been given to schools to comply with the changes, following which the law will be implemented stringently from September 1. "According to the law [first issued in 2008], school buses cannot speed more than 80km/h, and must have RTA-approved speed control devices installed to ensure this," said Furat Ali Al Ameri, director of franchising and enforcement at the RTA's Public Transport Agency.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will launch a new bus route on February 3 to link International City with Warsan 3 and the service will be operational on Fridays. The public transport routes are one of the key strategic initiatives and key pillars of raising the percentage of trips made by public transport means through enticing various segments of the community to use mass transit systems in their daily travels.
