In a move to increase the number of people commuting by bus, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is rounding off a month-long competition, which selected one bus rider each day as the winner of a Samsung Galaxy S3. Any passenger who checked in and out of a public bus in Dubai between December 14 and January 14 automatically became eligible for the competition, explains Ahmed Mohammed Al Hammadi, Director, Bus.

Safety is a top priority for the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on its buses and good driving habits are promoted by the authority. In a new initiative to keep the morale of drivers up and encourage them to drive safely, it will send two SMSes in their mother tongues every hour.
Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) officials told Gulf News on Sunday that six months' notice have been given to schools to comply with the changes, following which the law will be implemented stringently from September 1. "According to the law [first issued in 2008], school buses cannot speed more than 80km/h, and must have RTA-approved speed control devices installed to ensure this," said Furat Ali Al Ameri, director of franchising and enforcement at the RTA's Public Transport Agency.
However, the middle-aged people – between 26 and 45 – are still the primary users of public transport with a share of 63 per cent. RTA is trying its best to woo the younger people on the public transport bandwagon, which includes both buses and metro. Among its initiatives to attract students and youngsters is the recent launch of student pass.
A kilometre-long dedicated bus and taxi lane on Al Ittihad Road from Dubai’s border with Sharjah towards Al Mamzar is all set to open in the next few days. The opening of the road for the first time in nearly six years is expected to ease traffic on the perennially clogged highway though other motorists will be fined for using the track.
The number of vehicles that pass by the Ittihad Road on a daily basis is 260,000, revealed a senior Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) official on Sunday. Executive Director at the RTA Engineer Maythaa Bin Odaii said that the number of vehicles coming to and from Dubai using the Ittihad Road is 13 per cent of the total number of vehicles that run in the Emirate.
